In this case, the therapy provides the same level of protection as the condom. Results of HPTN 052 were confirmed in 2016 in the PARTNER study, when no single case of HIV transmission recorded in many thousands of unprotected sexual contacts between a HIV-negative and a successfully treated HIV-positive partner.
Early efficient HIV therapy is an important means to prevent the spread of the virus. In addition, it is important to consider that “therapy as a protection” is essential in overcoming stigmatization of HIV-positive people and countering discrimination. Those who have once realized that effective HIV therapy prevented the transmission of the virus through sexual contact without a condom, also get rid of possible prejudices against an HIV-infected person.
