10 Years of the Swiss Statement: 90% of the German population do not know about protective effects of the ART

February 28, 2018

If a person takes efficient antiretroviral therapy, HIV infection is not sexually transmitted – this statement, published on January 30, 2008 in the Swiss medical newspaper, has become really groundbreaking news and has entered medical history as the “Swiss Statement”.

A modern German study shows that most people do not know about the protective effect of the ART. According to a recent ВZgA (Bundeszentrale für gesundheitliche Aufklärung) study, only 10% of the population is aware of this. At the same time, many people are still afraid to get infected HIV in their everyday life (through sharing kitchen utensils, using WC or even through hugs) – which is absolutely impossible, Aidshilfe writes.

10 years after this, HPTN052, PARTNER and Opposites Attract studies proved that Swiss scientists were right. “Therapy as a protection” has been a recognized safe sex strategy for a long time already: HIV protection exists under certain conditions, for example, when person takes pills regularly and HIV virus has not been detected in the blood for more than six months. According to the HPTN052 study, with efficient therapy the chances of HIV transmission during unprotected sex are reduced by at least 96%. In this case, the therapy provides the same level of protection as the condom. Results of HPTN 052 were confirmed in 2016 in the PARTNER study, when no single case of HIV transmission recorded in many thousands of unprotected sexual contacts between a HIV-negative and a successfully treated HIV-positive partner.

Early efficient HIV therapy is an important means to prevent the spread of the virus. In addition, it is important to consider that “therapy as a protection” is essential in overcoming stigmatization of HIV-positive people and countering discrimination. Those who have once realized that effective HIV therapy prevented the transmission of the virus through sexual contact without a condom, also get rid of possible prejudices against an HIV-infected person.
