поиск по ресурсному центру As of May 14, 2018, more than 5,200 men and about 1,800 women with HIV have been registered in Georgia. Most patients are aged 29-40.
Since the beginning of the year, 250 new cases of HIV infection have been detected in Georgia, the total number of people registered with the infection exceeded 7,000. Such figures were announced by the Scientific and Practical Center for Infectious Diseases, AIDS and Clinical Immunology. However, experts challenge these figures, suggesting the real figures to be much higher.
According to the latest data, in Georgia the disease progressed to the AIDS stage in 3,700 HIV-infected people, and more than 1,400 people died.
“Although Georgia is among low HIV/AIDS prevalence countries, according to world statistics, and, most interestingly, in in the bottom of the list of these countries, on the other hand, judging from HIV epidemic patterns, the estimated number of HIV-positive people is equal to 7,000. And this is a fairly high count for a country as small as Georgia”, the National Center statement indicated.
Most cases of infection (45.4%) were due to heterosexual mode. This figure is followed by those infected as a result of injecting drug use (41.3%), homo- and bisexual contacts (10.7%), through MTCT (1.4%) and blood transfusions (0.5%). In other cases, the infection modality is not established.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization and Georgian experts suggest that the real number of infected is much higher – about 11,000.
In Georgia, the first case of HIV infection was registered in 1989. Ten years later, in 1999, the number of new patients was 35, and in another 10 years it was already 344. The largest increase in registered cases of HIV infection was in 2015 and 2016, when this figure grew by more than 700 new cases.
