Kyrgyzstan has a concentrated HIV epidemic, with 6,095 people living with HIV officially registered (65% of the estimated number), and 1,900 of them receiving antiretroviral therapy (coverage 20% of the estimated and 31% of the registered number of people living with HIV) in 2014. More than 60% of HIV infections in recent years were caused by sexual transmission. The HIV prevalence among people who inject drugs (PWID) remains above 10%, is above 2% among sex workers (SW) and has increased among men who have sex with men (MSM) to 6%. In 2014, nearly half of all newly diagnosed HIV infections were among women.
There are significant sub-regional differences (HIV prevalence of 17% among people who inject drugs in Osh and Djalal-Abad, and 0% in Issyk-Kul).
