Thirty years into the AIDS epidemic, leaders came together at the 2011 United Nations General Assembly High Level Meeting on AIDS from 8–10 June 2011 in New York. The Political Declaration emerging from this meeting, while appreciating the “substantial progress over the three decades since AIDS was first reported” calls on all United Nations Member States to redouble their efforts to achieve universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support by 2015 as a critical step towards ending the global AIDS epidemic, and outlines a series of new targets towards achieving this goal.
